GSU Graphic Design History with MODA:

In 2009, The Museum of Design Atlanta decided to work with GSU Graphic Design on upcoming projects for the museum. Over the years MODA has been so supportive of our program and it's students by continuing to include design concepts from our program for their advertising/marketing and exhibitions.
Below, you can see first hand the first "Camp MODA" concepts submitted by designers in the program that was documented. Looking back on it now, some 14 years later it becomes more of a case study of how the process went during their selection:
"Tuesday 1:00pm, August 8, 2009:The Museum of Design Atlanta Offices Atlanta.
The MODA critique started with everyone's beautiful work spread out on the museum floor so that Brenda and Raja and another employee could get an idea of all the designs.
The Poster Designs were next to the Mailers each of the designers did for this project. Again, Brenda was very excited and complimentary to everyone's design. As Mike, Jason, Nathan,Chrissy, and Joe looked on, the process of elimination and selection began. Brenda made comments and remarks about each design as she went through the entire selection process. Design concepts were taken from the floor to the table as the editing process kept moving along until Brenda reached her final 5-6 poster/mailer designs.
Some of the posters designs she has encouraged some revisions in order for them to be used in the future. Brenda intends to use several of your designs for the next several years at MODA for their Summer Design Camp.
Mario Segarra's work was selected for Summer Design Camp 2010.
The editing and decision-making continues as Brenda and Raja discuss the work out loud.
All the work being placed on the table was given a second look once Brenda and Raja got to the final 10 selections just to make sure they hadn't overlooked anything that still might work for the Summer Design Camp.
Down to the final 6 Designs with other designs being considered should Coca Cola become a major contributor to their Summer Camp. If so then they felt those with the more obvious Coke imagery would move to the front of the line. They are still waiting to hear from Coca Cola.
Back to the table again to re-check to see if any work had been mistakenly omitted.

I am very pleased to announce that for the first time MODA (Museum of Design Atlanta) has agreed to work on a design project with a class at Georgia State University. This project will be explained fully by the Executive Director of MODA, Brenda Galina, on Wednesday August 26th at 11:30 at MODA. Everyone must be present. She will meet with us and discuss the printed promotional project with the head of their Branding group, Leda Walker, who is with Fletcher Martin Advertising. (www.fletchermartin.com) Graphic Designers will focus on creating printed materials for specific exhibition by MODA.
These selected designs must be within the MODA Branding guide yet is wide open for visual concepts and presentations. Paper for printing will be furnished by Neenah Papers. February 12, 2010-May 1, 2010 Patron Opening Friday February 12, 2010 MODA will present a photography exhibition curated by Portfolio Center in conjunction with the Georgia Tech Industrial Design Program.
This
exhibition will highlight, through one of a kind displays, fascinating
individuals and the designed objects they can’t live without.

I think the experience that all of us gained from this professional experience was a glimpse into how most companies/design houses/non-profits work in choosing designs to use. GSU Graphic Design went on after this project to work alongside MODA over the next 7 years...and now it's your turn.
If you look closely at all the concepts posted above, and there were many, the selection process was very lengthy and conversational with the MODA staff and the designers. It seems that the playfulness and the overall visual appeal of the poster /design chosen seemed the most versatile and unique to the MODA mission of what a summer camp could be. (It was their first so they wanted a design that could serve a large audience of adults and children and sponsors.) Mario Segarra's design was used for 10+ years and now it's your turn to create work that will carry on the design "torch" for another 10 years hopefully.
Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) is the only museum in the Southeast devoted exclusively to the study and celebration of all things design. MODA, (formerly known as the Atlanta International Museum of Art & Design) is a participating member of the Smithsonian Affiliate program, and examines how design affects our daily lives through engaging exhibitions, educational outreach, and special events designed to initiate conversation and community dialogue.
MODA regularly features exhibitions highlighting architecture, industrial and product design, interiors and furniture, graphics, fashion and more. In 2003, MODA’s Board of Directors, staff, and community advisers made the collective decision to redefine the Museum’s mission and direction, and the Museum of Design Atlanta was born. MODA is currently located in Midtown Atlanta, a part of the Midtown Arts Corridor.
